Minister of Youths and Sports Development Barrister. Solomon Dalung has condemned the insufficient and late release of sports funding in the country.
Dalung made this assertion in a chat with sports journalist in Abuja yesterday.
The sports minister lamented that funding for competitions were delayed and sometimes insufficient thus making adequate preparation ahead of tournaments a herculean task which further affects the country performance in such tournaments
“Nigeria has learnt no lessons when in comes to swift allocation of Sports fund for competitions, since I became the sports minister they have never released funds on time. We have to struggle, sometimes we have to reach the office of the president before we could get funds released to us, this has always been the situation. “
According to him ” the funds for the National Sports festival was just released today but the request for the funds have been sent since March.
He further appealed to the government to curb the fire brigade approach adopted as this never bodes well for the country even in the international eye and some persons end up carrying the blame and being made scapegoats of the things they are innocent of.
He concluded by stating that sports should be seen as a unifying factor which fosters economic progress and unity among the citizens .
“The government must see sports as a major factor in national development, we still view sports through a myopic lens classifying it as recreation and not looking at it from the point of economic development, the over 50years war between North and South Korea was ended through the coming of Winter Olympic one cannot put sports aside away from national unity and development. “ he noted
