We Want To Make NSF Medalists International Champions- NBF

Vice President of Nigeria Boxing Federation, (NBF) Brig Gen (Dr) Ola Ayeni (rtd) has expressed the readiness of the federation into making champions out of the Medalists at the just concluded 19th National Sports Festival (NSF) that would be acclaimed across the globe.

While speaking to LEADERSHIP sports, Ayeni who is also the vice president of the African Boxing Federation and a member of the International Boxing Association opined that the coming of the NSF has exposed talented athletes to the federation, adding that plans are in motion to make the athletes international champions ahead of next year All Africa Games in Morocco.

“We want to make our athletes’ international champions, the winning boxers from the sports festival will be called to camp in which they will be exposed to different international competitions. They are champions now locally,” he opined

“The 19th National Sports Festival was a good competition in which we have seen young boxers that have moved from youth levels defeating their senior counterpart.

“This is what we have been hoping for, which is necessary for the development of boxing,” he added.

He went further, underscoring the achievements of the boxing federation recorded in 2018

“In this year alone, we won 2 silver medals at the Commonwealth Games. We won 1 gold, 1 silver at the African Games which made us qualify for the Youth Olympics in Argentina.

“At the Youth Olympics, we won silver. Again we went to Algeria, we won 2 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze. All our representatives won medals. We can see now that the level of development is constant. We are getting back to where Nigeria boxing was in the good old days. If we go with this tempo, we will be winning back our gold,” he concluded
