In an effort to develop the game of Golf in the Federal Capital Territory and its environs over 250 golfers are expected to participate in the 2019 FCT Presidential Golf tournament.
FCT Golf Association has set February 2nd as the kick-off date for the event, with both amateur and professional golfer home and abroad is set to lock horns for glories.
According to the FCT Second Vice Chairman, Mr. Clinton Agbo, who spoke with newsmen in Abuja over the weekend said that the Engr Oladapo Olaide Mohammed led board is working tirelessly to ensure a successful hosting to the events.
“Everything is ready, funds, registration, and all the necessary logistic, as far as the game of golf is concerned, you can register anywhere in the world, we have over 250 golfers that have indicated interest,” he said.
“Not only that, we had a contact with Scotland Golf Company to provide Golf kits for the tournament”.
“One of the mandates given to the board by the minister of FCT Bello Mohammed is to make Abuja home of golf and we want to showcase that on the 2nd of February when FCT presidential golf tournament be taking place” he noted.
He also opined that the ultimate goal of the present board is to grow the game and would leave no stone unturned to ensure the goal is achieved.
“We have also met the secondary school both private and public in the city to drive home the game of golf in Abuja.”
He further mentioned that the game of golf can be accessible to everyone against the backdrop that is made only for the elite class.
“Our aim is to make the game well known to everyone resident, many believe the golf game is for the rich people, we also to reach the head of the service for civil servants to participate. FCT has also promised to give land to help every Nigerian to play the game.’’
Agbo explained that, for the amateur level, there are no prizes attached but there they will be given a lot of gifts items for participants.
However, disclosed that seven governors have shown interest to grace the championship.
