2020 NSF: Sports Ministry, Edo State Sign MOU

The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Edo state government ahead of the 20th National Sports Festival to be hosted by the state.

The hosting state agreement event was held at the Media Centre of the Abuja National Stadium yesterday.

Following the award of the hosting rights to Edo State in December 2018, it is required of the state and the Ministry to sign an agreement which will spell out the duties and obligations of both parties and advise on the composition of the Main and Local Organising Committees

 Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, said that the ceremony signifies and also confirms Edo state host for the next national sports festival adding that the state government is ready to host the rest of the nation having inspected the sports facilities in the state.

“This is the confirmation that the Edo state government is willing to undertake the responsibilities associated with the hosting of the 2020 edition of the national sports festival in its magnitude, “ he said

“I am further encouraged with the venues and facilities I saw in Edo state during my recent visit to the state, the state has enough facilities to host the festival with what is currently on the ground “ he added.

In his reaction the Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki affirmed the state commitment to the hosting of the games, adding that they will work closely with the ministry of youth and sports to ensure a successful hosting of the events in 2020.

“ Edo state understand the implication and the full ramification of hosting right and Edo is cognisance of the goals of the national sports festival,” he said.

Obaseki further pleaded that the Nigeria council of sports meeting should be held on 21st of February 2019 for Edo state to swing in full action in preparation while adding that money has been set aside in the 2019 budget for the games as the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu has being appointed as the chairman Local Organising Committees.

Earlier the permanent secretary, ministry of sports, Mr Olusade Adesola opined that the ministry will put in place the Main Organising Committees that will work hand in hand with the LOC to ensure a successful hosting of the 20th edition National Sports Festival.

On his parts the Nigeria Olympic Committee NOC president, Habu Gumel revealed that the games will be used to select the best athletes who are expected to do the nation proud in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The 20th NSF is slated for March 2020.
