Hell was let loose at the Stadium in Damaturu, Yobe state on Thursday when fans of the Yobe Desert Stars have displayed what is best described as a vicious cycle of violence on the visiting Akwa United team after losing 1-0 to them.
According to the official Twitter handles of both teams, @desert_fc, and @AkwaUnited_fc, pandemonium had struck when the referee had disallowed a goal which could have earned the club at least a point during the game.
The fans had gotten furious and unleashed their anger by throwing stones into the pitch.
“Yobe fans are furious and are throwing stones onto the pitch. Both sets of players and the officiating officials are in the middle of the pitch. Police are using tear gas to push the fans back.
“Our team bus has been vandalized by angry Yobe Stars fans after our 0-1 victory against their team in Damaturu,” Akwa United said in a tweet.
The home side also confirmed the violence in a series of tweets via its handle.
“Firing continues to disperse the crowd but both players are safe.
“Terrible Situation as Police are firing Tear Gas. The Officiating is the case,” Yobe stated in a tweet.
The unhealthy attitude of unleashing anger during matches has been on the rise lately.
It will be noted that since the abridged league started, there have been cases of fans attacking match officials when their clubs lose.
