Pakistanis Beat Panthers To Emerge Champions Of Iris Smart Cricket League

Abuja Pakistanis Cricket Club (APCC) has emerged champions of the inaugural Iris Smart Technologies Abuja Cricket League, sealing their unbeaten runs in the league with an emphatic 81 runs defeat of Cricket Club Abuja Panthers (CCAP) in the final game.

A highly tensed final game watched by sizeable spectators at the Cricket Oval, Package B Complex of the National Stadium, Abuja, saw CCAP win the toss and elected to field first thus putting the Abuja Pakistanis to bat.

The Pakistanis got to a slow start with early fall of wicket by their captain and best player in the League, Hashim Mohammad as well as the slow run rates in the early overs thus giving the CCA Panthers momentary shine that was later subdued by the fireworks of Kalpa Alvis.

At the fall of the wickets of Hashim and Saad Butt, Kalpa Alwis came into the rescue and changed the fortunes of his side. Kalpa supported by Joseph Ishua, Saad But, Adnan and Taimu Bashir, took the APCC to 189 runs thanks to their opponent’s poor fielding. For 20 overs and still not out, Kalpa scored 90 runs off 48 balls, while Eshua accounted for 33 runs off 47 balls and Mohammad Hashim had 0 run off 2 balls.

Saad Butt also contributed 13 runs off 12 balls, Adnan Akbar 2 runs off 2 balls and Taimu Bashir 14 runs off 11 balls to ensured APCC victory. In the second innings, the Panthers came to chase 189 runs and needed 190 runs to win. That seemed impossible as they could only manage to produce 108 runs at the end of 20 overs for the loss of 9 wickets.

Kalpa Alwis emerged the man of the match and the best batsman while Saad Butt was adjudged best bowler with 3 wickets. Representative of title sponsor, Mr. Deji Fisher, thanked the organizers for a job well done and pledged more support for the Abuja Cricket League in the years ahead. Aside the cash prize of N200, 000 for the winner and N100, 000 for the runners up, other various cash prizes were given out courtesy of Iris Smart Technologies and Olam Rice.

Amongst the prizes were, N10, 000 for man of the match, best batsman and best bowler respectively. Chairman of the Abuja Cricket League Committee, Mr. Michael Egiethua, said  with sponsors like Iris Smart Technologies, cricket in the FCT had just been given a very promising lease of life, noting that the organisers are up to the task of keeping the league highly competitive as they plan to open up the league to players from across Nigeria as well as look at the possibility of increasing the prize monies across board.
