Ahead of the 2019 All Africa Games in Morocco, The Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Barrister Solomon Dalung, has charged the Nigerian athletes to do the nation proud at the biennial games.
The sports minister made this known while receiving the victorious Team Nigeria contingents to the 2019 African Senior Wrestling Championships in Hammamet at his office in Abuja yesterday.
Dalung applauded the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) for their superlative performance at the continental showpiece while urging the athletes to put up a brilliant show when the fly the country’s flags at the 2019 All African Games.
“Wrestling is proving to be one of Nigeria’s strongest sports both at the continental and global level, thus giving the sports an enviable place of pride and elevating the country’s image as a top wrestling nation in the world”he said.
“I also commend Champion Igali for ensuring that the Nigerian flag is always hoisted at local and international competitions whenever there is a wrestling competition. This goes to show the ongoing revolution in sports in the country, both administratively and in the output of athletes.”
“I also want to charge the all the Nigerian athletes to be ready to do the country proud when they represent the country at any competition, most importantly the upcoming All Africa Games”
He however, reaffirmed the federal government support towards the development of sports in the country.
On his part the president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) Daniel Igali hailed the sports ministry for their continuous supports adding that the federation will produce podium finish athletes in the All Africa Games.
“We are grateful to the sports ministry for their support to the federation over the years and I assure Nigerians that we have world class wrestlers who are bend to fly the country flags high at any time call upon. “ he said
It was a domineering performance from Team Nigeria at the 2019 African Senior Wrestling Championships in Hammamet, Tunisia as the team claimed a total of 9 medals in 10 categories- 5 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.
The 12th African Games will take place from August 24 to September 3, 2019 in Rabat, Morocco. This will be the first time that the African Games will be hosted by Morocco.
