Depression forces Olympic champion To retire at age 22

Lithuanian swimmer Ruta Meilutyte, who last year was depressed, announced Wednesday that at the age of 22, she will be ending her sporting career as an Olympic and breaststroke champion.

“I am ready to start a new chapter of my life, thank you to all those who supported me on this road,” she said in a statement saying she wanted to resume her studies and “live simple things, grow, better (know) and know better the world “.

At the age of just 15, she won gold in the 100m breaststroke at the 2012 London Olympics, before re-offending the following year at the Barcelona Worlds.

But in 2018, the Kaunas champion admitted to suffering from depression.

She has not appeared in competition since the 2018 World Cup in December in China, where she had not reached the least final.
