Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) President, Ibrahim Gusau said that the federation will produce podium finish athletes at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
The AFN boss made this known at the ongoing Athletics National Trials at the main bowl of the Moshood Abiola stadium in Abuja yesterday.
Gusau revealed that the federation is working tirelessly to ensure that only the best athletes will be selected to represent the country at the All African Game billed for Morocco in August.
“I can assure Nigerians that the federation will produce and fill in podium finish athletes at All Africa Games and who can also deliver medals for country at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo” he said.
“We are expecting personal best and national best will be gotten in this trials, most of our top class athletes are not in the country they are in United State of America and from records we know they are doing very well”.
He further mentioned that top athletes from the national open trials will be invited for final camping with the foreign based athletes.
“We will have the list if does athletes that will report for camping after this trials and camp will kick off 5th of July, we have a very tall ambition in the federation and we pray that we meet them, because the sports ministry asked us how many medals we are expecting and we gave them our expectations”.
“Hopefully we will get to the benchmarks that we have set for ourselves ahead of the Games in throws, track and field events, I can assure you that we are 80 percent ready for the Games”.
He also stated that Nigeria has top class athletes that can deliver at the world biggest stage.
“We have promising athletes that will make the nation proud in Morocco like Blessing Okagbare and Divine Oduduru who has shocked the world will be there and we still have other athletes that will deliver for Nigeria in 100m and 200m we think we will do very well, 400m and 800m met be difficult but I can tell you that Nigeria is very well on track”.
According to the Technical Director of the federation Sunday Adeleye, opined that the technical crew are satisfied with the level of turnout from the athletes across the the country.
“We have athletes cut across all states, clubs institutions, schools so it’s a open trials to all Nigerians, we received a entry of more than 1200 athletes excluding the foreign based athletes” he said.
“Athletics in Nigeria in on the rise and we have potential athletes that can give Nigeria Gold medal in Africa and the world at large”.
“We are so happy with the crop of talents that we have even with the little challenges we are striving hard to make sure we put up an impressive performance in Morocco and get a good representation at the Tokyo 2020” he concluded.
