AFN Debunks Suspension Of Annual Congress

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has debunked the suspension of its Annual General Congress (AGM) scheduled for Thursday, December 4, 2019, in Awka, Anambra State.

This was contained in a statement signed by the chairman, media committee of AFN Amanzi Marcus, the AFN president , Ibrahim Shehu Gusau also confirmed that a Board meeting will be held on Tuesday 3rd December 2019 in Awka before the general congress the next day.

Gusau, who is also the vice president of the Confederation of Africa Athletics, (CAA) stated that invitation letters have earlier been sent to the 37 state association chairmen adding that the congress would be an avenue to develop ideas for the progress of the federation.

“The constitution of the AFN confers on me the power to call for meetings, and the invitation letters earlier sent to the 37 state association chairmen including that of the FCT on 4th November 2019 inviting them for the congress remains valid as nothing has changed nor has the congress been postponed. There is no better avenue to discuss the progress of athletics,” he concluded.

President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee Habu Gumel is among dignitaries expected to attend the AFN AGM.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the organising committee for the 2019 congress of the AFN, Patrick Estate Onyedum says all is now set for a successful hosting of delegates during the Congress in Awka,

He noted that the 36 state athletics association chairmen including the FCT and Board members of the AFN are to be accredited on Tuesday, 3rd December 2019 in Awka,

Onyedum, who is a Board member representing the South-East zone also disclosed that  Tuesday is arrival date while Thursday, December 5th is departure date.
