The board of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has waded into the crisis rocking the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) by setting up a four-man investigative panel to mediate in the crisis.
This was part of the decisions reached at its board meeting held yesterday ahead of their Annual General Meeting (AGM) slated for today in Abuja
The spokesperson of the NOC, Phemmy Adetula, said that the panel which has Barrister Francis Orbih, 2nd vice president of the NOC and president of Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) as chairman, was mandated to report its findings within the shortest possible time to NOC.
He said with the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games just seven months away, NOC will close its eyes to happenings in the AFN, stating that the Olympic movement and solidarity is known for peaceful co-existence.
The other three members of the committee are Binga Margaret, president of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF); Toyin Aluko, president of the Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN); and Emmanuel Nweri, who is the secretary of the committee.
It would be noted that just few months to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic, Nigeria’s athletics body, AFN has split into two fractions with the Ibrahim Gusau led fraction declaring autonomy from the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, while the Olamide George fraction set up investigation panel to probe the suspended president, Ibrahim Shehu Gusau for alleged gross misconduct
Meanwhile, the Olympic body has appointed HRM Oba Saheed Elegunshi as the chairman of the NOC Patrons Forum. The appointment was announced at their first Patrons forum held yesterday in Abuja where the roles and responsibilities of the patrons were discussed among other vital issues affecting Nigeria’s sports sector.
In attendance were former governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan; representative of HRM Oba Saheed Elegunshi; former NFA chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima; Rt. Hon Marc Wabara; Mrs Kofo Nwokedi and Maj. Gen. Adamu Dyeri (Rtd).
