Tokyo 2020: AFN Eyes 2 Gold medal, To Organise 3 Camping Phases

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has said that the federation would focus on winning two gold medals at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

According to the AFN’s calendar for 2020 made available to LEADERSHIP sports the embattled president of the federation, Hon. Engr. Ibrahim Shehu-Gusau, said that the federation would organise three phases of camping to ensure adequate preparation for the athletics team for podium finish at the world showpiece.

 “Various national and international competitions are lined up to ensure that the athletes that will represent Nigeria at the Tokyo 2020 Games, where the federation hopes to win 2 Gold Medals, are at their utmost best” he said.

“The 1st Phase will hold in Port Harcourt (February 16 – March 16, 2020); the 2nd phase takes place in Kaduna (April 10 – May 10, 2020) while the 3rd and last phase will take place either in Spain or Germany (June 20 – July 19, 2020)”.

In the calendar, the 2020 season will begins on Saturday, February 8, 2020 with the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon and will be followed by the AFN All Comers Athletics Competition holding in Asaba between 13th and 14th February, 2020.

Kaduna state will host this year’s CAA Region II Athletics Championship taking place from April 14-19, while the Dr Awoture Eleyae U-16 and U-18 Athletics Competition takes place in Ozoro, Delta state from May 3-5.

The World Athletics Combined Events Challenge comes up in Lana, Italy from April 25-26 to be followed by the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships from May 2-3 in Minsk Belarus.

 Edo state host will the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race on May 23 and action moves to Abuja on May 26 for the National Trials for the Olympic Games which will last 6 days.

There will also be the World Athletics U-20 Championships in Nairobi Kenya from July 7-12 and thereafter the Olympic Games.

Zamfara state will host the Ibrahim Shehu-Gusau 10km race on September 20 and the last competition for the year is the North-West Invitational School Relays scheduled the Ahmadu Bello Stadium Kaduna.
