The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has denied ‘Fake News’ report in online media and rumours making that four hundred billion naira (N4billion) was approved by the presidency for the 20th National Sports Festival (NSF).
Ramon Balogun, assistant director of press in the Ministry, that he was not aware of such approval for the NSF.
“I don’t have the power to speak on the matter and I’m not aware of such approval for the National Sports Festival,” Balogun said.
However, a source close to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development said theinformation is completely false with no shred of evidence and urged the public to disregard it totally.
The source, who has the knowledge of the working of the Ministry and government policies, said it will be irresponsible and nonsensical on the part of the government to approve a whopping N4 Billion in support of the 2020 National Sports Festival that is being hosted by the Edo State government after only one billion naira (N1bilion) was approved as the total sponsorship money for the 2018 edition hosted in Abuja by the federal government of Nigeria.
“It will amount to nonsense and irresponsible for the government to approve N4 billion for the 2020 National Sports Festival that has a host. While the last edition, held in Abuja and has no host state, only N1bilion was approved for sponsorship.
“The 2020 Games has a host state and just to support the state because of the losses they incurred due the several postponements as a result of COVID-19, somebody is alleging without any evidence that the Presidency approved N4 billion for the Games. That is completely false and should be discarded by all,” the source said.
Recall that Edo State government through the Local Organising Committee (LOC) threatened to shut down the Games Village by noon on Thursday if the intervention money promised to them was not released. However the threat was never carried out as the following the intervention of the Presidency with assurance that the process of getting the money to them is at final stages.
