Edo State deputy governor and chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC), Philips Shaibu yesterday inspired Team Edo to picked the men’s and women’s football gold medal at the ongoing National Sports Festival.
Team Edo emerged champions in the men’s events after they narrowly defeated Team Lagos 3-2 at the football pitch of the University of Benin Stadium yesterday.
Shaibu led team came from two goals down to beat Lagos with Solomon Osagie scoring the winner from the penalty spot in the 76th minute.
Meanwhile, Violence and controversy took centre stage during the final of the women football game between Team Edo who were 1-0 better than Team Lagos at the sports complex.
The problems flared after fans of both sides exchanged missiles, prompting police to move into position to prevent confrontation among fans and restore peace.
The violence started after aggrieved Lagos fans threw missiles at the fourth official who displayed just an additional one minutes after the 90th minute.
The aggrieved Team Lagos officials and fans claimed they should have been awarded more minutes as medical personnel of Team Edo spent about 10 minutes attending to their injured goalkeeper.
Immediately after the final whistle, an argument ensued between players of the two teams with officials from both bench also involved in a heated argument.
As some fans began to find their way onto the pitch with missiles coming from all directions, one of the armed men of the Nigeria Police force slapped a fan from Lagos who was adjudged to have been the mastermind behind the confrontation.
This act by the security personnel created chaos leading to the exchange of punches from players, officials and fans. Some fans were seen wielding knives, while some wielded all sorts of weapons.
